For thrill-seekers, France is home to some legendary destinations across several disciplines: if you have 24 hours to spend behind the wheel of a racing car, then Le Mans will be your choice. For lovers of taking things at a more sedate pace, a short bike ride on the Col du Galibier is certainly a must. And where do the kings of skiing like to meet up? In Biarritz of course.

The less sporty will nonetheless perhaps make the trip, if only to taste the famous rillettes! But when it comes to finding an outstanding driver, Le Mans is also the go-to destination. And this is how we find the duo of thieves played by Mélanie Laurent and Adèle Exarchopoulos. In the stands of the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit, binoculars in hand, they prepare to recruit a young hothead (Manon Bresch) for a high-risk mission.

From the first races, in 1923, the drivers met south of the city on the legendary 24 Hours Le Mans circuit race, once sized up in its time by a certain Steve McQueen. Its 13km track makes it one of the longest circuits in the world. When on site, why not take a look at the shops, have a drink on the panoramic terrace or even visit the 24 Hours Le Mans museum. But the “real aficionados”—like our gang of thieves—tend to find themselves at Aux Portes du circuit, a well-established bar, run for 46 years by the legendary Jeanine.

WHEN TO GO?

In June, of course! For its legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans race!

Step 2

Biarritz
& Bidart

64200 Biarritz

What better place than Biarritz to refresh Laclos' literary masterpiece, transposed into the 5G lives of today's connected teenagers? This is how Célène (Paola Locatelli), a Parisian high school student, first arrives in the city of surfers. Leaving behind her lover Pierre, she finds herself caught in the Machiavellian games of an Instagram queen and a sinister surfer with whom she falls in love. The rollers of the coast are certain to get her heart falling head over heels.

But don't be like Célène and rush into the waves without having taken a few lessons—or an internship—in one of the city's 18 schools. And for accommodation, why not opt for a “surf camp”? At low tide, go to the Maison du Surf to discover everything about surf culture.

Finally, if you are looking for an oasis of calm, far from the crowds of summer tourists, take a detour to the small, less frequented town of Bidart, between Biarritz and Guéthary where you can try your hand, or rather your swing, with a little round at the Ilbarritz golf course. All while taking in breathtaking views of the ocean.

WHEN TO GO?

There are waves all year round in Biarritz, but the most enjoyable period for surfing is in the months of April and May in spring, as well as September and October!

This summer 2022, the heroes of your top-rated Netflix series were called Jonas Vingegaard, Thibaut Pinot, or even Tadej Pogačar! And they went head to head in “Tour de France: at the heart of the Peloton” during the legendary mountainous stages. If we had to choose an essential crossing point, why not the Col du Galibier, in the Hautes-Alpes, a stage that is such a challenge it is not even given a category?

At 2,642 meters in altitude, with a ride of 18.1 km at an average of 6.8% gradient, it certainly deserves its fearsome reputation. The narrow road winds through the middle of a dry, lunar landscape, bordered by a wall of snow in winter. But in the height of summer, pro-runners especially need water bottles and even ice packs to cool down. For the record, in 1911, the first (and only) racer to have completed it without setting foot on the ground once was called Émile Georget. And for the less sporty, of course it is possible to ascend with electric bikes or discover the region by car.
